Between the Crimes

2014
Spectacle Eyewear Shop
Boston, MA
Multiple horizontal shelves contain sculptures made of recycled newspaper. They look like buildings and structures around Boston with transparent areas of newsprint through which warm light shines. Each building has a photograph of a Boston landmark on it. The photos are color photos with white mats and black frames. The wall behind the shelves is orange.

A positive lens.

I searched between the crimes in used Boston Globe newspapers for articles about community building, preservation movements, and selflessness. Between the Crimes was an effort to make all the good in our Boston community into "front page" news.

Each sculpture is a re-creation of a Boston landmark or icon—places and objects that exist only here. The transparent spaces are filled with evidence of community building and celebration. They glow as if to shed light on the positive aspects of our city. The opaque areas—the articles normally featured—become almost illegible. The photographs accompanying each icon strive to capture a moment where something mundanely familiar becomes truly spectacular.

Installation gallery.

Boston as beautiful.

A color photo taken from behind a golden/brass colored sculpture of the mother duck. Taken as though the photographer is looking over her shoulder.
A color photograph of a rusty T subway car. It is white on top and green on the bottom and stopped next to a stop light on its left. It is backlit by the setting sun, causing the train to be bathed in an amber glow.
A color photograph of cit hall. It is a cement and brick building comprised of hard-edged geometric shapes. It is featured against a clear blue sky.
Picture
The silhouette of a seat in Fenway Park against the Green Monster, a giant green wall with billboards and lights on trusses above it. The wall is photographed through netting intended to protect people from getting hit by baseballs. Two indistinct figures crouch on the filed in front of the wall.
